2022 Volunteers’ Week

A time to say thanks. 1-7 June. Find out more. Volunteers' week.

The 1st June marks Volunteers' Week in the UK. You may know that the origin of the word ‘volunteer’ is from the Latin word ‘voluntarius’ which means ‘willing’ or ‘of one's own choice’. The choice that volunteers make to give up their time and skills, willingly, is humbling. Nehemiah volunteers come from a diverse community which includes a range of backgrounds and profiles, thus adding to the vibrant Nehemiah community and enabling us all to learn from each other.

Nehemiah volunteers have helped us to beautify our gardens, alongside our Residents, to refurbish our homes and to serve as translators for our Residents for whom English is a second language. And this is just the start as we plan to expand and develop our volunteering programme this year.

We are so hugely grateful to all of our volunteers who have helped us, particularly when we needed their support the most. Last September we hosted a Graduation Ceremony for some of our Residents who were moving on to semi-independent living, and we needed extra support in pruning, weeding and tidying our Streatham house garden, before the Ceremony. We wouldn’t have met the tight deadline without our wonderful volunteers, particularly those from The Order of Malta.

A big thank you to all of our past, present and future volunteers, and happy Volunteers' Week to you all!

Gardening Week

Garden Post

This week the UK celebrates National Gardening Week. At The Nehemiah Project, we are extremely fortunate that our houses have beautiful gardens for our Residents to enjoy. Our Nehemiah houses are based in the city, yet our gardens help our Residents to feel like they are in the countryside. We are all aware of the healing power of nature, and how important it is to spend time in the fresh air and be able to soak up and appreciate God’s abundant creation. Our Residents have told us how the Nehemiah gardens have helped them with their recovery journeys, giving them time to stop, reflect and heal painful memories from the past.

And let us not forget all of our wonderful volunteers, who have helped our gardens to flourish. We are particularly grateful to our volunteers from The Order of Malta for coming back time and time again to work alongside our Residents and prune, weed and plant! Here is what one of them had to say about his experience as a Garden volunteer: "It was great to be able to help out with something so local to me, and do such valuable work. I was very humbled to meet some of the Residents, learn more about their lives, and spend time with them working together on a project with a common goal creating a thing of beauty for them to enjoy."

We hope that you are able to enjoy a garden today, wherever you may be!

International Day of Happiness

International

Today is the United Nations International Day of Happiness.

Since it began in 2013, events have taken place all over the world to celebrate human happiness and wellbeing. With the world still dealing with the challenges of the pandemic, 2022’s theme is ‘Build Back Happier’. We love this because building happiness in recovery is so important as well.

While everyone’s journey to happiness is different, charity Action for Happiness gives advice on how people tend to find happiness through their 10 Keys of Happiness. They also make a range of resources to help you find happiness, like their calendars with daily themes. Their advice today? “Focus on what makes you and others happy today.”
